There are some unique complexities when it comes to fire hazards in data centers. In such buildings you would want to protect your valuable property but also to keep the down-time minimum as the pauses in the activity may lead to massive financial losses.
Below are the major causes of fire in data centers:
– Wires and cables: A large amount of wires and cables are used in all data centers. Although they do not transfer energy, data cables are highly flammable in a case of fire. The main cause of electrical fire in data centers are faulty and/or improperly maintained power cables. Periodic maintenance for these cables should be done, all these wires and cables should be kept tidy but most importantly, sufficient fire suppression and detection systems should be installed.
– HVAC equipment: Because of the motors, electrical parts and cooling gases, HVAC systems used for the conditioning and cooling of data centers may become causes of fire. These systems need to be protected with correct suppression and detection systems.
– Flammable materials: In addition to the equipment listed above, data centers may also house flammable materials such as cardboard boxes, documents and papers. Although these materials do not have the ability to start fire, they may become important sources of fuel for fire and may lead to the spreading of it.
- Suspended ceilings and raised floors: These enclosures may house equipment and materials that may cause fire but are also very hard to reach in case of fire. Therefore, gaseous fire suppression systems need to be installed for these enclosures.
- Outdoor fire hazards: Fire detection systems should be installed in order to protect fires that may start outside the building (f.e. parking lots).
- Data centers which do not have the sufficient and correct fire suppression and detection systems have high risk of fire. In order to have these systems installed and to keep them maintained, get in contact with AY-SO experts.
